Colonial Delicatessen 7th Avenue North Antigua Guatemala
Yolkobsens enjoy this stretch of Antigua Guatemala’s “avenida-scape,” located on the 7th Avendida Norte between the 4th and 1st Calles, because its a different arena for people watching, store browsing and, yes, restaurant sampling.
We often hit Restaurante La Estrella - 7a Avenida Norte #42 for a slice of great Chinese food. Once in the eatery, there’s not a hint of anything from the orient. It could be any Guatemalan eatery in a converted colonial house, but for the presence of Estrella herself. When she comes to your table you feel you are in the presence of a kind and clear soul. The food is really good too.
We walked out of La Estrella and I had seen this little Delicatessen just across the street from Estrella called Colonial Delicatessen we did find another little Gem hidden on the 7th Avenue. This a very clean, small and well stocked shop with a large variety of interesting goods.
Lots of imported Pasta, Sauces, Soy, Curry Pastes of all kinds cover one wall of the Deli. Olive Oils good ones, a Deli cooler filled with a small but ample variety of Cheeses and meats and other cool things to eat. They do a small to go lunch business and the food looked well if we had not been stuffed with Chinese this would have been an option.
Then at the very back another small room is packed with great wines from around the world. French, Italian, Chili, Argentinean etc etc etc. With a good selection of Champaign and a few selected Liquors, Gin, Vodka, Tequila, Rum and Scotch. The prices well I would have thought that a small specialty shop like this would have a hard time competing with the prices of La Bodegona supermarket. Not so, the prices were about the same if not better then some of the spirits at La Bodegona.
The staff watched us with as if we were about to lift something, but were more then helpful. And yes they take credit cards. Another little Gem not found on TripAdvisor or Lonely Planet. And thank god for that.
